Yankees Captain Delays Return

Derek Jeter is the captain and shortstop of this nations most iconic Major League Baseball team, the New York Yankees. He is a 12 time- all star and is now in his 18th season. He's helped the Yankees to 5 World Series Championships and 7 AL Pennants since his tenure with the team began in 1992. Jeter has been the face of the New York Yankees for as long as I can remember. Last season Derek Jeter suffered a fractured ankle on a routine play to shortstop, that is projected to keep him out of play until the beginning of this season. As opening day grew closer and closer Jeter's return became more delayed as a result of cautionary measures taken by the organization.

According to SI.com, as of Thursday, April 18 2013 another crack was found in Jeter's newly healed left ankle that will now further delay his return until after the 2013 all-star break, which occurs during the beginning of June.

The team isn't completely missing Jeter, ( not saying they could do without him) but they certainly would like to gladly have him back. Fortunately for the captain, although the new crack was found, surgery is not necessarily an option. On March 7, he claimed to have been fully healed but this new fracture has showed surely in spite of his previous ankle fracture. The team is sitting at a respectable start of 8-6 and are currently in 2nd place in the AL East. Statistically the Yankees have been fairing well without their captain. They're 12th in the MLB overall with 70 runs, 7th overall in batting percentage ( .267), 7th overall in OBP ( .338) and rank 4th in slugging at .454.

This Yankees team is performing at this high of a level with most of their stars down due to injuries. Guys such as Curtis Granderson, Marx Teixeira, pitcher Andy Pettitte and of course Derek Jeter. With the team playing the way they are now, the stars have much to look forward to anticipating all healthy returns. The Yankees currently sit behind Boston in the for 1st place in the AL East, the Red Sox are starting off very well with an 11-4 start.

The Yankees and Res Sox rivalry is one of the most notable ones in all of sports. For them to be the top 2 in the AL East always creates a great competitive baseball atmosphere for sports fans. With Jeter's return delayed, and age showing to be somewhat of a factor, the Yankees may look the captain's future with the team considering he's played 18 seasons in the MLB and all with the Bronx Bombers.
